Glitter, Sparkle, Danger - International Gem Trade Has Many Facets

By Sonja Pace

The global trade in precious stones is a multi-billion dollar business. It touches the lives of people in the mines of South Africa, stone cutters of India, and countless others around the world. These precious gems adorn, kings, queens, movie stars and millionaires, and serve as that special gift for a birthday or a young bride. The gem trade - a business that begins in the bowels of the earth and ends up in the glittering shops of Hollywood’s Rodeo Drive or New York’s Fifth Avenue - brings joy, wealth and glory to some, badly needed income to others and prolonged war and devastation to still more. VOA’s Sonja Pace has this look at the gem trade, and the lives it touches. (Part 1 of 5)

They glitter and sparkle. Precious stones have fascinated men and women through the ages and still do - whether at a fashion and jewelry show in London or on the red carpet in Hollywood.

They come in all sizes, colors and shapes. Some are fairly common and affordable. Others are rare, highly prized - such as the Crown Jewels - part of Britain’s royal heritage. Queen Elizabeth wears them on state occasions. Otherwise, they’re kept in the Tower of London, where they attract up to two and a half million visitors a year.

“What we’ve got here is very historical and worn by our sovereign, so that, of course, immediately takes it out of the public sector,” says Keith Hanson, Chief Exhibitor at the Tower. “And, the fact that some of our jewels date back over 800 years and that we have the largest top quality white diamond in the world on display.”

The use of precious stones goes back a long way. Rulers, nobles and warriors of many ancient civilizations favored them to show their status.

Turquoise and lapis lazuli were favored by the pharaohs of ancient Egypt and there is evidence that cross-border trade in gem stones was prevalent thousands of years ago.

“We were so surprised to have at the beginning of our history bracelets from the tombs in Abydos in Upper Egypt using some kind of semi-precious stones, especially lapis lazuli, which doesn’t exist in Egypt,” explained Wafaa al Saddiq, Director-General of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. “This means they must have imported that stone from Afghanistan.”

The Egyptian Queen Cleopatra was known to favor emeralds; the ancient Romans described diamonds as splinters from the stars; and in India, ancient manuscripts refer to gem stones as unique creations of Mother Earth.

Gem stones are a product formed by nature, mainly deep within the earth. Over the centuries, man has used all sorts of ways to get them out, including dynamite.

It is often back breaking work. South African miner George Oloefse worked at it for nearly half a century. “I have five brothers, he said. “All of them worked in the mines, because my Dad worked in the mines.”

Oloefse worked at the Cullinan diamond mine north of Johannesburg. South Africa has been a major diamond producer since the stones were first discovered there in the 1860s, and diamond mining still provides an important source of income.

Diamond mining provides vital revenues in other African countries as well.

Half-way around the world in India, the gem stone industry - in particular cutting and polishing - is big business.

For Jayshri Bajaj, who works in a diamond factory in Mumbai, it’s her first job and her introduction to diamonds. “It’s great to see a diamond for the first time,” she said.

Bajaj is among one million Indians working in the gem trade, a vital source of income and an important segment of the country’s growing economy.

The gem trade also helps feed families in impoverished corners of Africa, but it has a darker side. When the riches derived from it fall into the hands of despots and warlords, they can kill, and they have done so.

But in the end, the gem stone’s journey takes it to the jewelry shops - be they the big names on New York City’s Fifth Avenue or the more affordable ones in cities and towns across the globe.

Della Tinsley of East London Design says jewelry is about the individual and marks important events in our lives. “People give you jewelry when you’re 21, when you get married, when you have children,” she notes, “and you inherit jewelry as well.”

Gem stones have been prized throughout man’s history and their appeal shows no sign of diminishing.

For the fourth straight year, Relios Inc., designer and manufacturer of contemporary sterling silver jewelry, is joining the fight against Breast Cancer – both nationally and internationally. Here on the home front, Relios Designer Carolyn Pollack is once again embarking on a personal journey by joining a group of walkers in the upcoming national Susan G. Komen 3-day 60 mile Breast Cancer Walk. This year, the walk holds a special significance for Carolyn and her friends who have named their team “Elise’s Army” – in memory of a recently departed friend who had walked on their team for the past three years.

(Vocus/PRWEB ) September 29, 2008 — For the fourth straight year, Relios Inc., designer and manufacturer of contemporary sterling silver jewelry, is joining the fight against Breast Cancer – both nationally and internationally.

“Elise’s strength and positive spirit was an inspiration to us all, and we will be thinking of her with every step along our journey,” says Pollack. “The 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk is an amazing experience. Because it is such a challenging three days, the bond you feel among all who participate is truly overwhelming. The closing ceremonies are an emotional celebration of millions of dollars raised through the participation of thousands of walkers around the country.”

Carolyn’s walk takes place Friday, October 17th through Sunday, October 19th in Philadelphia – a city that has become near and dear to her heart through her work as a frequent guest on the QVC network, where she is known for creating a popular line of designer sterling jewelry.

Speaking of hearts, Carolyn’s group has set a team goal of being the top fundraising team through the sale of a necklace Carolyn designed especially for the cause. Each necklace, which features a carved pink rhodonite heart, was crafted and donated by Relios, and will sell for $30.

“Our team goal is to sell at least 500 necklaces,” says Carolyn. “The heart is a very fitting symbol for this cause. By wearing this necklace you will be reminded of the many lives you will touch through your contribution and support. 100% of each $30 purchase will go directly to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk, a total of $15,000!”

In addition to proceeds generated from the heart pendants, Relios is donating 10% of purchases from its “Think Pink” Breast Cancer support jewelry selection to the Susan G. Komen Walk though the end of October.

In support of QVC U.K.’s annual Breast Cancer Care Fashion Show, Relios is donating $25,000 worth of jewelry toward the cause. The signature necklace is a 3-strand “Shades of Brown” Torsade, which will be shown on the broadcast set to air on Wednesday, October 1st. This is the 35th anniversary of the show, featuring models that have had or are currently living with breast cancer.

“If what we’re doing with the walk, and with our web sales, and by supporting QVC U.K. makes the difference in even the life of just one person fighting the fight against breast cancer – then it’s all worth it,” says Carolyn Pollack. “If just one mother, wife, sister, or daughter is spared because of our collective efforts, then we must do this. It’s that important to us.”

About Susan G. Komen for the Cure
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Breast Cancer 3-Days, the organization has invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill its promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world. New techniques, timeless tales at jewelry exhibition

Carolyne Zinko, Chronicle Staff Writer

A ring, a necklace or a bracelet can be more than a metal or stone object. It can also be the keeper of a memory - just ask its owner, or its maker.

There were plenty of personal stories to go around at the 12th annual Designers by the Bay jewelry showcase at Shreve & Co. on Post Street in San Francisco.

About 21 of the Bay Area’s top jewelers showed their wares to 135 clients and industry colleagues, thanks to the Northern California chapter of the Women’s Jewelry Association, which coordinated the event. Manak Couture won first place in a design contest judged on technical excellence, creativity and market appeal.

Early in the evening, Bill Whetstone of Paradise Associates pulled a tiny coral carved elephant figurine out of his pocket, a treasure he says he carries at all times. It’s an 18th century piece from India, representing Ganesha, the Hindu god of success.

“I showed it to a dealer in Jaipur with whom I was having trouble in my dealings,” he said. “He touched it to his forehead and said, ‘This is a very old piece.’ He was a collector of Ganesha, it turned out, and from that day on, he allowed me to buy every rare gemstone I wanted, and at a reasonable price.”

There were no obstacles to buying jewelry at the show, which featured the latest in trends: sustainable jewelry created from recycled gold and laboratory-made gems.

Amber Marie Bently’s Oro collection featured necklaces with medallions of recycled gold on rubber cords made of recycled tires, as well as bracelets with removable turquoise and other gemstone centerpieces for mixing and matching, at $1,800 each.

Mireille Schwartz bought citrine earrings for herself and amethyst for her daughter, Charlotte, who is Bently’s goddaughter. “I wanted something almost identical, but a little different, so that Charlotte could be independent and spread her wings with her own color,” Schwartz said.

In the next cubicle over was Fernanda Fisher, whose Nandiz line is sold at Manika and contains delicate and chunky statement pieces favored by many in the social set, including her famous mom, Rita Moreno.

Meghan Connolly Haupt showed her lab-created jewelry in the same booth as Jennifer Dawes’ ethically sourced diamonds. “These are optically, chemically and aesthetically comparable to their mined counterparts,” Haupt said, “and they have almost no social or environmental issues.”

Gordon Aatlo, who won the Spectrum Award - one of the industry’s most prestigious - in 1999 and 2000, was there with his tsavorite garnet and diamond swirl-design ring, costing $12,500. And there was John Brana, a former vice president at Charles Schwab, who left the corporate world after some soul-searching following the deaths of two family members. His Monterey collection included a necklace that featured aquamarine metal mesh ribbon from Italy paired with amazonite stones and fine, non-tarnishing silver.

Designer Clare Ullman worked as a men’s fashion consultant at Macy’s for 12 years before becoming a jewelry designer. She’s known for her South Sea pearl bracelets and necklaces with an ethnic but polished flair, sold at Manika on Maiden Lane and at private shows.

Carlos Chanu, of PCD Fine Pearls, who represents the Italian Marchisio line in the United States and designs pearl jewelry, had the best story of the evening. He showed a bracelet in 18-karat rose gold with a handmade arabesco finish and diamond rondelles, with a $10,500 price tag. It was stretchy, thanks to its inner workings, made from the spring of an Italian racing car. “You can tell people at a cocktail party, ‘Want to see my Ferrari? It’s on my wrist.’ ”

Fine jewelry —all fun and playful

By Apples Aberin Sadhwani
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines—Precious yet playful best describes Tamara Comolli’s fine jewelry pieces. The designer, who was in Manila recently, presented her new collection of multi-colored stones accented with witty, surprising little details.

A seriously gorgeous 17-karat peach sapphire ring with one-karat diamonds on each side, for example, reveals an unexpected cut out of the company logo, a water drop (not a tear drop, mind you) on the bottom side of the ring. A bangle that seems commonplace is made special by the choice of stones and the fact that the stones move from side to side as the wearer moves. An ordinary necklace is also made unique with diamonds on one side and sapphires on the other.

Based in Germany and the US, manufactured in Italy, and available in Rustan’s Makati, the Tamara Comolli Fine Jewelry Collection was first established in 1992 by Comolli.

“When I founded the company, I thought there was a little bit of fun missing in the world of fine jewelry. It was all very serious and intimidating. And the whole emotion and fun behind wearing jewelry, all this feminine joy, was missing. I said I was going to
create a brand with color, but high-end,” she said.

As such, Comolli designs her pieces based on color stories, making her one of the first designers to use multi-colored stones in fine jewelry. In fact, one of her standout pieces in this collection is a bracelet-aptly named “candy”—a piece brimming with vibrantly-hued sapphire charms that look sweet enough to eat.

Established

She also used a lot of Rose Gold for this collection. “Now Rose Gold is established in fine jewelry. We were one of the first brands in Basel, in the international jewelry show two years ago to introduce a full range of Rose Gold collection. It was the biggest talk of Basel. And after us, the other brands followed.”

Although best known for her “Mikado” bracelet, which is composed of little acorn-shaped stones, Comolli’s first-ever piece was the CV or Curriculum Vitae bangle, a bangle with sliding diamonds that you could collect and augment.

“I wanted to give people the chance to collect,” she explained. “So they buy one for their birthday, engagement, baby. It was the thing we were most known for. But now, we are most known for the pieces with the little acorns. That’s what in the end really made the breakthrough.”

Comolli offers high-end one-offs (the 17-karat sapphire ring, for one) and casual pieces, like water drop pendants on leather cords. The brand’s following range from teenagers to octogenarians who all want to wear her extraordinary pieces.

Comolli’s designs are also versatile and innovative. A potentially dowdy-looking rope of pearls, for instance, is designed for versatility. The wearer may don it in countless ways—looped around twice or thrice, as a modern lariat, or as a normal necklace.

“I want to do precious, high-end jewelry that is not intimidating,” said Comolli. “I want the ladies to wear it. I don’t want it to be locked away. They should wear it casually, as well as elegantly. That’s the idea behind it. That’s the future of fine jewelry.”

Jewels return to runway at Milan Fashion Week

By DANIELA PETROFF
MILAN, Italy (AP) — Baubles and bangles have returned to the Milan runway after several seasons locked tightly in the jewelry box. Even at Jil Sander, the most minimalist of labels, diamond studded earrings sparkled from the models’ pierced ears.

In general the jewelry is down to earth, with the novelty of pieces of wood used to fashion necklaces and bracelets. Ethnic jewelry of the silver-and-stones kind is also popular. Earrings tend to be large and dangling, like the ones at Marni made out of heavy stone and crystal appliques.

Bracelets usually come in strands, wrapping around the wrist like a cuff. Cavalli chose a more classic style in glittering gold and stone to go with his mini ball gowns.

Gucci was meant to be the highlight of a slow day in Milan, but although chocked with wearable styles, it never reached the fashion spheres of past seasons. Gucci did stick with the bejeweled theme, with large brooches holding gowns together and a palette based on precious stone hues.

In the evening, the fashion crowd gathered for a gala dinner presentation of actress Gwyneth Paltrow’s video clip, directed by Dennis Hopper, to promote the latest Tod’s bag. Named “Pashmy Dream,” it is a large ultrasoft leather sack adorned with copious leather tassels. The actress is in Milan for the presentation.

Other shows of the day included Marni by Consuelo Castiglioni and Roberto Cavalli.

GUCCI

For summer wear, Gucci’s creative director Frida Giannini, an accessory expert, opted to limit jewelry to large precious stones, including amethyst, agate and crystal, which more often than not she used as embroidery for her eveningwear, including the latest Gucci black suede clutch.

Daywear at Gucci is all about holidaying, starting with the crisp summer suit with boyish jacket and cropped trouser, worn with a cocky straw hat and the new leather backpack.

The Safari style pops up everywhere, from miniskirt and rolled shorts to strapless jumpsuit. The sporty outfits are spiffed up by gold zippers and large pockets. Mini kaftans offer a poolside alternative that can also drift into the summer night.

As in many of the collections seen on the runway this week, footwear at Gucci comes close to being stilts, with an ultrahigh heel compensated by a thick platform sole.

For evening, Giannini envelopes her women in ultra light, long gowns, that could double for tents. Large brooches sewn into the fabric and made out of precious stones hold these gowns together.

The Gucci palette is also based on precious stone hues, plus the summer favorite — turquoise.

MARNI

The collection described in the designer’s fashion notes as a “contemporary take on couture fashion,” centers around coordination. Everything blends together, from the dress or skirt, to the tops, to the two-tone cardigans, which accompanied many of the outfits. Intricate embroidery with raffia, tulle and little round disks, enhance the sophisticated feel of the collection.

Jewelry at Marni is larger than life, with heavy use of geometric and floral shapes.

CAVALLI

In a surprise shift of fashion gears, Roberto Cavalli, known for his racy styles, chose sweet over sexy for next season.

His latest collection was dotted with embroidered mini gowns, reminiscent of an imaginary “couture Barbie,” especially when shown off by the long-legged, demurely coifed models. There were also plenty of shimmery shorts and cropped jackets in the collection for Barbie to change into after the ball.

But be not fooled. As designer Cavalli said after the show, “Naivite is not part of my vocabulary.”

Rush trying to get a handle on new jewelry

Story by Tully Corcoran
LAWRENCE — Brandon Rush’s national championship ring sat in a dusty corner in the bowels of Allen Fieldhouse.

Rush had fumbled it for the second time in three minutes. Ironically, the second fumble came as Rush was saying what the best part of Kansas’ national championship ring presentation ceremony, a private event of present and former players and coaches in Allen Fieldhouse.

“Just getting these,” Rush said, pulling his ring out of its velveteen case.

He then sent it crashing to the floor.

“Damn,” he said.

A lot of things have changed for Rush since he earned that ring. He’s rich, now. But he’s found it difficult in his quick trip back to re-acquaint himself with the Lawrence nightlife.

“I couldn’t even get into Abe’s last night,” he said, citing his failed entry into Abe and Jake’s Landing (the place was full). “They shut us down last night.”

Rush isn’t planning on wearing his ring around and showing it off for much longer — “That’s not me,” he said. He’s giving it to his mother, Glenda, who has his Final Four ring and all those Big 12 championship rings.

Darnell Jackson has no such plans for his mother, Shawn.

“She’d lose it,” Jackson said. “She’ll carry it around in her purse and leave her purse around and somebody can take it out of there.

“You could take it to a pawn shop and probably make a lot of money.”

Jackson said he wouldn’t be wearing his ring around, either. Some of his Cleveland Cavaliers coaches called him Friday to congratulate him on getting the ring. He’s the only Cavalier who has a national title ring, but he’s not planning on rubbing that in.

“I’m a rookie, they could stick me in the steam room,” Jackson said.

Jackson said he’s settled into Cleveland. He bought a three bedroom house and a bunch of furniture recently. Says he loves playing with Lebron James and Ben Wallace.

But being in Allen Fieldhouse again got him a little nostalgic.

“I was going through campus today, just remembering walking to class, not going to class,” he said. “Me and Mario (Chalmers) was talking about how we just wish we could go in that tunnel one more time, just skip practice and play in the games, and just start all over.”
