TANGERANG: Customs and excise officers have seized thousands of pieces of jewelry, along with dozens of cellular phones, sent to Soekarno-Hatta airport from express mail services in Hong Kong and Singapore, an official said Thursday.
Eko Darmanto, chief of intelligence at the customs office, said officers conducting delivery surveillance at the airport’s cargo warehouse discovered the 2,100 bracelets and 1,150 necklaces worth Rp 3.8 billion packed in several boxes.
The jewelry is magnetic and is said to have a medical function.
“On the declaration forms, the jewelry was described as being ’shackles’ in order to avoid import duties,” he added.
The boxes of jewelry were addressed to a man identified as AR, a resident of Pluit, West Jakarta, Eko said, adding the market price for a magnetic necklace is Rp 1.5 million, with that of a bracelet around Rp 1 million.
“The illegal import of this magnetic jewelry and these cellular phones has cost the state Rp 1.4 billion in lost import taxes,” he said. –JP

U.S. District Court finds jewelry design does not infringe on patent
MINNEAPOLIS, Aug 27, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) — A recent court ruling in a patent infringement suit is expected to greatly open the marketplace for Chamilia(TM), LLC, and provide retailers and consumers with more options for personalized jewelry.
In Pandora Jewelry, LLC v. Chamilia, LLC the United States District Court for the District of Maryland ruled that Chamilia’s(TM) jewelry, which uses decorative locks that allow wearers to personalize their bracelets and necklaces while preventing the beads from bunching or sliding on the strand, does not infringe upon Pandora’s patent. A ruling on the validity of Pandora’s patent is still awaited from the court.
“We are thrilled with the court’s ruling and agree with Judge Blake’s assessment that this will promote greater competition and more choice for consumers,” said Jeff Julkowski, Chamilia CEO.
“In addition to vindicating our long-held position, this ruling will enable Chamilia to serve even more retailers and allow consumers a greater ability to design and personalize their jewelry.”
The beads used by both Chamilia and Pandora are interchangeable. According to Julkowski, the legal ruling has cleared any misinformation that might have previously kept retailers from adding Chamilia to their lines.
In its ruling, the court found “… the interchangeability of Chamilia and Pandora beads … only promotes competition and choice for consumers.”

The deceptively plain stone wakes up to the light and transforms to reflect the wearer
By Kathy Schultz
“The first time I saw labradorite, I thought it was an ugly, sludgy gray — but it had fire,” says local jewelry designer Shamila Jiwa. My sentiments exactly. But when I met Jiwa, she was wearing a stunning necklace with such fluorescence that I was converted.
“It’s the quality,” Jiwa says. “I sought out the best of it and started using it in my jewelry.” The stone that was so initially unappealing has become the signature material of the designer’s collection.
Mined in Labrador, a province of Canada, high-quality labradorite possesses amazing chameleonlike qualities. The feldspar-based stone is capable of transforming itself depending on the light it refracts.
Known as the Schiller effect and labradoresence, its very makeup (to be technical, the stone contains platelets of minute inclusions such as ilmenite and rutiles) is responsible for its fiery properties. And since light is constantly in flux within any environment, the stone itself can reflect numerous shades of blue, green, purple, gold, orange, yellow and red.
“It absolutely goes with everything, taking on the palette of the dominant color of whatever you’re wearing,” Jiwa says. “The stone complements, rather than competes with, your outfit.”
The moody, deep-colored hues of fall, such as cobalt, charcoal, plum, teal, royal blue and aubergine, are the perfect backdrop for this earthy element. Jiwa believes that if you only have one gemstone necklace, it should be labradorite.
The designer has created a collection of earrings and necklaces out of this special stone, along with metals from sterling silver to gold fill and gold vermeil. Minimalists will like a classic pair of heart-shaped earrings. For something swingy and sexy, choose the long duster earrings that tickle the shoulders, or a pair that incorporate London blue topaz, with hand-hammered gold rings.
Necklace designs range from the multi-stone luxe boa necklace to simpler affairs with solitaires, tri-stone pendulums and lariats you can layer. They feature faceted or smooth polished labradorites in a variety of shapes. Jiwa also uses other gemstones she loves, including brilliant gold rutilated quartz, seafoam chalcedony, and London blue topaz.
“I believe in showcasing the natural beauty of the stone, and to let my design aesthetic frame the specimen in a simple and elegant way,” says the self-taught designer and gemologist, who is inspired by her travels. The daughter of eastern Indian parents, she grew up in Tanzania and often accompanied her father to the local goldsmith, where she watched him design special jewelry for her family.
During her anthropological studies, the multilingual designer (she speaks Gujarati, Kutchi, Swahili, Hindi and French fluently) discovered the talismans of beauty and protection used in the rituals of various cultures. “Labradorite is often referred to as the ’stone of new beginnings.’ It builds strength and assists with life’s intense transitions,” she says. “Maybe that’s one of the reasons I like it.”
Each piece of jewelry comes in a little pillow pouch with a printed “story” about the stone. You’ll find Jiwa’s jewelry online at www.shamila.com, at Venue in Ballard and at the Seattle Art Museum downtown. Prices range from $88 to $1,200. Custom designs are available upon request.

Tens of thousands of years ago, Stone Age man inaugurated a tradition that has been honored throughout the course of human history. Before writing was developed and before crops were ever planted, men were plying women with jewelry. Ivory bracelets and shell beads from the Paleolithic period bear witness to the longing for ornamentation. Since the dawn of time, naturally, fashions have evolved a bit, but the wish for beautiful jewelry is still with us.
Through the ages, the reasons for making and giving jewelry have varied. Fine jewelry can be evidence of true love-or apology. It can be a pick-me-up gift to oneself one memorable example is Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s?) Some use jewelry as a way to flaunt their social rank. Some people prefer more functional jewelry, such as hairpins, buckles, or brooches. What has always remained predictable is that exquisite jewelry of any sort makes a welcome gift.
Whether you are looking for cufflinks, studs, or watches for a man or rings, bangles, or pins for a woman, Geary’s of Beverly Hills offers the work of some of the most innovative jewelry designers of this era. You will not be disappointed.
From the graceful curves of a Penny Preville necklace to the charming work of Jay Strongwater or the ultra-modern watches by Ritmo Mvndo, you can find fine jewelry to suit any taste. Find glowing pearls, sparkling diamonds, and exquisite jeweled creations among their many offerings.
When the first Stone Age man presented his true love with a necklace strung with shell beads, he could not have guessed what he started! Giving fine jewelry, no matter the occasion, has become a sure way to please. Say “I love you” with a dazzling diamond pendant or show her how well you know her by giving her a charming jeweled pin featuring her favorite animal. No matter what you choose, few things are in the inimitable good taste as fine jewelry.

Some people see a skull and think its saying, “You are going to die.” Essayist David Sedaris’ latest book, “When You are Engulfed in Flames,” devotes an entire chapter to the skeleton that hangs in his bedroom repeating that scary sentence over and over.
But others—here’s hoping you’re one of them—see skulls as a reminder to live life to the fullest. Rebecca Collins, the jewelry designer responsible for the pretty (but a little creepy) bracelet shown here, likes to think positive.
“You don’t have to say that the skull means ‘memento mori’—remember death. You can say, ‘It’s a reminder to live for today.’”
This got Collins thinking about remembering in general and before you could say “Google” she was reading me a delightful poem titled “Forgetfulness” by former U.S. poet laureate Billy Collins:
“The name of the author is the first to go
followed obediently by the title, the plot,
the heartbreaking conclusion, the entire novel
which suddenly becomes one you have never read,
never even heard of…”
When, eventually, we got back to talking about her jewelry (rebeccacollinsjewelry.com) Collins said, “Skulls are historically timeless. They’re like crosses. They aren’t a trend. They’re forever.” And they’re everywhere. After all, we’ve all got one.
When Collins wears her skull designs—the bracelet shown is carved onyx set in silver ($1180, Neiman Marcus Chicago) — she’s telling the world, “I try to do what I want to do more than I need to do.” Living for today.
That’s a noble ambition and a goal to strive for.
“I spent my whole life doing what I need to. I used to be the ‘list’ queen. Now I don’t have a list,” she says.
And if that’s the message you’re emitting from an expensive skull bracelet or a $1 skull bandana from Wal-Mart all the better. It’s surely better than “You are going to die.”
Even if that’s an inevitable truth.
The Poet Laureate is appointed annually by the Librarian of Congress and is paid $35,000. The position has existed since 1937. Among notable Poet Laureates was Robert Frost (1958-59).
Skull and Bones is Yale University’s best known secret society. Bonesmen have included President George W. Bush as well as his father and grandfather plus cabinet members, Supreme Court justices and some of American’s most powerful corporate chieftains.
