High Levels of Lead Found In ‘Hannah Montana’ Jewelry

Children’s jewelry from three Disney-licensed products were found to contain lead at levels up to eight times higher than is considered safe, KCRA-TV in Sacramento reported Wednesday.

The “Disney Fairies,” “High School Musical” and “Hannah Montana” charm bracelet sets were sold nationwide at Barnes & Noble bookstores and featured in the children’s section of the national chain.

Four of the charms, manufactured by High IntenCity of Fair Lawn, N.J, were purchased from a toy store in California and found to contain high levels of lead, including one with more than 150 times the state standard.

According to the “Charm It!” Web site, individual charms are sold at department stores and boutique toy stores.

“We are disappointed to see that the industry still has not cleaned up the problem of lead in children’s jewelry. Lead in jewelry marketed to young children is a health threat that cannot be tolerated. We expect the companies and regulators to take strong, immediate action to protect children from these hazardous products,” Michael Green, the health center’s executive director, said in a statement.

The health center on Wednesday said the charms are being pulled from Barnes & Noble stores.

The manufacturer has not yet commented on the case.
