Iran: Prehistoric Fashion Center?
Discovery Travel
March 20, 2006—Stylish clothing, jewelry, makeup and textiles, all dating to 5,000 years ago, have been unearthed in Iran, according to recent reports issued by the Circle of Ancient Iranian Studies and the Cultural Heritage News Agency of Iran.
Archaeologists there suspect that a state-of-the-art textile industry thrived in ancient Iran, allowing men and women to wear trend-setting, colorful, designed pieces, which may have influenced the clothing styles of other regions.
Many related artifacts were found in women’s graves located at a site called Burnt City, in the Sistan va Baluchistan province of southeastern Iran.
“An eye liner bowl, a comb, a makeup box, a marble device for applying eye liner, along with some jewelry, were dug out from the grave of an 18-year-old wealthy woman,” said Mansour Sajjadi, who continues to lead the archaeological team at the site.
He added, “They also used to wear gem necklaces and bracelets, all considered chic masterpieces 5,000 years ago.”

White Memorial hosts adult jewelry class
Torrington Register Citizen

Thirteen women attended the Spring Fling and Nature Jewelry Making Class at the White Memorial Conservation Center Saturday, facilitator and professional jewelry designer Kerry H. Lucid said.
“Kerry was charming and showed us how to make something very easy that looks very complicated,” said Zhichang Zhou from Torrington.
White Memorial, 80 White Hill Road, is a nonprofit museum and organization promoting the environment and conservation, with more than 4,000 acres, Research Director Dave Rosgen said.
Lucid began designing her own jewelry five years ago after she received a beading kit as a gift. She now has her own business, Reconstruct LLC Innovative Jewelry.
Lucid said she has been teaching children’s jewelry-making classes at the center for about a year and organized the adult class after receiving parent and adult requests.
Ladder stitch bracelets were made with Brazilian light amethyst, peridot from San Carlos, Ariz., white lotus cultured freshwater pearls, Czech fire polished faceted lavender beads, and quality sterling silver clasps made in the United States, Lucid said.
“I’m in the process of (switching to) using only stones and minerals from the USA to promote our country,” Lucid said.
Group members also learned about the history of the stones, how they are mined and what type of energy each one manifests, Lucid said.
Amethyst is said to enhance spiritual awareness, peridot purportedly helps find happiness within oneself and overcome jealousy and anger, and the pearls are said to promote truth, loyalty and personal integrity, Lucid said.
“And the women get to put them all together on their own, which makes it creative and special,” Lucid said. “I was very impressed with how everyone was helping each other bead.”
Darci Stenson, Torrington, said she knew some information about the stones, but learned new things in the class.
“It’s always interesting to hear more,” Stenson said.
Jewelry by Lucid can be found in Flora and Fauna in Litchfield, 10 West LLC, Morris, and Papineau Studio in Bantam, Lucid said.
A mother-daughter perfume necklace class will be held at White Memorial in the upcoming weeks, and more adult classes are planned, Lucid said.

The Jewelry Exchange Acquires the Sirocco Diamond
dBusinessNews.com
Orange County - TUSTIN — The Jewelry Exchange announced that their executive diamond buyer has successfully acquired the famous Sirocco Diamond. This spectacular 16-carat stone was named for the hot winds that blow over North Africa. Legend has it that the original owner of the diamond was en route to meet a potential buyer, when the vehicle he was riding in overturned due to a sudden gust of wind. The beautiful diamond was said to be lost in the sands of the Sahara for many years, until it was mysteriously discovered in the private collection of a reclusive Asian gem collector. The diamond then went through many hands until it came into possession of the Jewelry Exchange during the buyer’s recent trip to the Middle East
The details of the stone are as exceptional as it heritage. Slightly over 16 carats, the round-cut stone is brilliant in reflectance and exceptionally clear. The Sirocco Diamond is now in the Jewelry Exchange’s private collection and is not on view to the public or for sale. However, the company has said that they will entertain offers over $142,000 from well-qualified individuals and investors.
The Jewelry Exchange is the nation’s leading independent importer of diamonds, and has over 30,000 loose gems in stock, including many in sizes and shapes that are difficult to find elsewhere.
